Decipher the noise of the online world

We’re just sayin’

April 18, 2016 by Staff

Everyone is Talking

About the truant Kindergartner who was given corporal punishment in school after he spit on a classmate.

Why do I care?

The story has generated a lot of online debate regarding corporal punishment in schools and what may or may not warrant that type of punishment, if anything.

Tell me more

Currently, only 19 states in the U.S. have active paddling practices, which include Georgia where this family resides. The child’s mother, Shana Marie Perez, had previously been arrested for truancy because her son had 18 unexcused absences and at least 20 tardies. She says that administration implied she would be arrested again if her son was suspended for the spitting incident, so she allowed the punishment. She then decided to record it, because she felt backed up against a wall, and out of choices. Perez admits that her son is a difficult child, but now regrets allowing the paddling, which is why she uploaded the video to Facebook. It has since gone viral.

The Kids are Alright

Speaking of difficult and stubborn children – it appears from a study of 700 kids , strong willed children have the potential to be great leaders and the highest of earners in their adult lives. The catch? We, as their parents, have to channel their energy for good, and help them avoid those Lex Luthor tendencies. For those of us who have little debaters and tantrum throwers (raises hand) not all is lost and those gray hairs may just be worth it. And, it sounds like the truant Kindergartner might have a chance, we’re just sayin’.

Hack it Up

Huffpost estimates we’ll spend over 23,000 hours doing laundry in our lifetime.  Did you know with all the time you’ve already spent,  it’s likely you’ve been doing your laundry all wrong? Fabulous right?

*sigh*

That’s what we thought too when we saw the ‘Doing it Wrong’ Guys  on this video sharing their wisdom on the topic. Here’s the bulleted Cliff’s Notes version on how to fix what you’re messing up – you’re welcome.

  • Use ½ the detergent recommended. Saving money for the win!
  • Don’t wash after only one wear. Obviously…a personal choice.
  • Overstuffing the machines is a big no-no, it leads to clothes not being completely clean and they are a wrinkled mess after drying. No one likes to iron. No one.
  • Put a clean damp towel in with a wrinkled load to de-wrinkle. This works great for those loads that might sit a little longer than you intended. Like a week longer. We’re not judging.
  • Put a clean dry towel in with wet clothes to absorb moisture which makes the load dry quicker.

Menu Planning Mastery

We don’t like to cook around these parts, or plan, or grocery shop. So naturally, mastering the menu with as little effort as possible is at the top of our list. This mom has kept her menu planning simple for the week by having a theme for each night, which simplifies decision making and keeps her budget in check. It’s a great way to start the menu planning process off for those who aren’t yet doing it, leading to pretty much guaranteed success.Baby steps, we like it.

She also has a pretty sound argument for making those leftovers work when you are inclined to let them get pushed to the back of the fridge. Add in these 20 one-skillet recipes that make bringing on the fancy every once in a while a possibility and we’re feeling pretty capable.  Of course, chicken nuggets on one-skillet nights for the kids, because food can’t touch. Duh.

Laughable

Mondays are rough. If you haven’t discovered Hedger Humor yet,  you’re missing out – she’s genius and we’re pretty sure she lives in our head or has spent time living our life.

Parting thought for the day

Yes, your kid will survive without a bath today. And tomorrow. We promise. But maybe give them one the next day. But, only if they played outside. In the dirt.
