First Things First
Thank you to all of our readers for understanding our absence in the last week and a half due to a loss in our family. Family always comes first. But, we’re back, and ready to roll with your daily emails.
We have been so encouraged by all of your positive feedback in our first month, and look forward to continuing to serve up a daily read that provides you with insightful, encouraging and helpful information. It takes a village to raise our kids, and we are so proud you have made us a part of yours.

About the mom who tested positive for meth while in labor, twice.
Why do I care?
It turns out this isn’t a mom who was a drug addict, far from it. Yet, due to two false positives, she had to deal with the assumptions of medical professionals and the threat of Child Protective Services taking her child.
Tell me more.
Maggie Downs went through her pregnancy minding all the recommendations and safety warnings given to her – she was a model mom-to-be. When she arrived at the hospital to give birth to her child, however, everything changed when she popped a positive on a drug test. While she and her husband deduced it was her inhaler causing this false positive and found evidence to that fact online, the damage was already done. The nurses and hospital staff changed their approach to her care and for the three weeks that followed she lived in fear that her new baby would be taken from her by Child Protective Services. Her account of this event has caused quite the discussion over whether drug use by pregnant mothers should be criminalized and how due process should be managed if a mom tests positive for drugs while in labor.

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are celebrities and parents who are known for their sense of humor. Recently, Kristen shelved the humor in favor of sharing what it’s like to live with anxiety and depression – something she has battled since she was young. Kristen opened up about how these conditions have affected her daily life and relationships. She went on to share how she copes with it in her daily life which includes regular exercise, introspection, and yes, medication. This conversation with Sam Jones from Off Camera is being applauded as a positive step forward in the effort to remove the stigma that can be associated with anxiety and depression.
The Kids are Alright
When you have a new baby at home, learning the ins and outs of what keeps them content is a bit of a guessing game. And, parents of multiple children will tell you, there isn’t one child who is the same so what worked for your oldest, may not work for your youngest. That’s why we loved this infographic that we found which offers advice for some common pitfalls of parenting a new baby and even some hacks for making daily life work with baby. Some of our favorites included:
- Sleep: Raise baby’s crib on one side so they can sleep at an angle if they are dealing with reflux.
- Sleep: If baby is going to daycare, help that transition along by sending along a swaddle blanket that smells like you.
- Crying: Calm your fussy baby by using the five S’s: swaddling, change to side or stomach position, shushing, swinging and sucking (pacifier or bottle).
- Health: Take off baby’s socks to assist in breaking their fever (who knew?!).
- Health: Blow in baby’s face to help them take medicine, it will stimulate their swallowing reflex.
- Bathing: Test the bath water with your elbow to get an accurate sense of the temperature.
- Safety: Instead of using corner kits from the baby store to soften edges on furniture, cut cost by using pipe insulation.
- Teething: Freeze foods into mesh feeders to assist with the pain of teeth coming through.
Menu Planning Mastery
Get your grill on this upcoming Memorial Day weekend with a great burger. We love the idea of sprucing up the usual by creating stuffed burgers or by going with sliders so guests can try out different burger types. Add in a homemade barbecue sauce option (or two) and you’re sure to have a main dish that pleases the masses. Round things out with one of these twenty side dishes and you’re golden.
We’re thinking we’ll go with the Avocado and Spicy Mayo stuffed Burger or Club Burger Sliders with Avocado Ranch dressing. Perhaps throw together the Cornbread Salad and definitely try the No-cook Potato Salad, because, less cooking is a win in our book.
