Everyone is Talking

About the Games in Rio.

Why do I care?

For competitive athletes everywhere, the Olympic Games are the ultimate goal. So this month, the constant streaming of competition will have them in heaven.

Tell me more.

The countdown is on and the athletes have begun to arrive in Rio where the Games will begin on August 5th and run through the 21st. There will be 42 sport disciplines, 306 events, and 206 countries represented.

But, is Rio ready for the onslaught of athletes, media and spectators about to ascend on their city? That remains to be seen as there still seems to be work being done and there are reports of even the waterways being grossly polluted.  Ready or not, let the Games begin!

The Kids are Alright

There are stories all over about kids being left in vehicles on hot days. Some parents have done it intentionally, just running into the store real quick, while others have done it by accident. The end result? Often tragedy.

So, what strategies can you put in place to help you remember your young children are in the car?

  • There’s an App for that! Kars4Kids Safety App is an app that has a goal to remind you. The reviews are mixed, but we’ll take an extra effort regardless.
  • Leave something you always take out with you, like your cell phone, purse or wallet in the back seat and chances are, you’ll go back for it if you’re going into a store or the office.
  • Get a carseat that like the SensorSafe  by Evenflo which reminds you upon arrival that your child is still in their seat.

Hack it Up

Cleaning out stains is a nasty business folks and one that often leads to ruined items and frustration.

Until now.

Have a microfiber couch? We’ve got you covered. Just pick up a white sponge, white bristle brush, rubbing alcohol and a spray bottle. The colored sponges and brushes are a no-no because they can lead to color-transfer onto the couch. Follow the tutorial to a tee and you’ll have a ‘new’ couch.

Out of carpet cleaner? This homemade carpet stain remover may just save the day. If your kids took to your carpet with a pen and you’re lacking a store-grade remover, this recipe of baking soda and vinegar may just do the trick. Give it a go, and let us know!

Red pasta sauce removal tips for the win! Wiki How-to’s cover how-to remove sauce from different types of fabric and Good Housekeeping offers a pre-treat with laundry soap and vinegar strategy when you are tackling the red sauce. No more throwing out red-stained items – score!

Trending DIY

The heat has been stifling lately, but you can use all that sun for some added fun with these solar powered crafts. All of the activities lend themselves to a science lesson which is an added benefit to this creative outlet. Personally, we plan to upcycle our broken crayons and attempt the shadow drawings.

Parting Thought

Sacrifice is when you give something away. When you give it to something you believe is greater than you, and expect nothing in return. When you lose something precious to you, forever, because something more important than you needed it more. Khizr and Ghazala gave their son to America. And their son, Captain Humayan Khan, gave his life to save his fellow soldiers, in the name of the country he loved. –Lea Grover on Scary Mommy
