Decipher the noise of the online world

All about Me-ternity leave

May 2, 2016 by Staff

Everyone is Talking

About the gal who took ‘Me-ternity’ leave from work to find herself.

Why do I care?

We’re all for ‘Me’ time, but we’re guessing you may be as dumbfounded by the concept of ‘Me-ternity’ leave as we were.

Tell me more.

Meghann Foye, a 38 year-old who has never had a child, was recently featured in a New York Post piece titled “I want all the perks of maternity leave – without having any kids”. In it, she shares why she thinks all women should have mandated time off to focus on themselves – an idea born out of watching her peers leaving the office for maternity leave to have their children.

Since the piece was published, there have been a number of responses online and let’s just say, they haven’t been receptive to her idea. An idea that even has a fictional character created around it.

Considering Meghann states parenthood is an excuse to get out of work, and she assumes it has resulted in a life that is more balanced, it’s no wonder she’s experienced so much backlash. Most parents we know don’t see that parenthood has brought us a lot of extra time and balance. More joy and love, yes. Time to reflect and find ourselves? Debatable. It depends on how much sleep we’ve had and if we’ve had time to eat.

Menu Planning Mastery

Are you feeding a crowd and doing it on a budget?  We are currently obsessed with all things bar, and we’re not talking about liquor, although that would make it a bit more interesting.

We’re actually speaking of food bars. They make for a great presentation, but are budget-friendly if you play your cards right. We found several options for you to give a whirl in the coming weeks and months of graduation parties, end of year celebrations, and summer gatherings:

  • The Pasta Bar – make one or two types of pasta, pick a couple of sauces, and a plethora of toppings. Add some garlic bread and done deal. (via The Big Red Kitchen)
  • The Burrito Bowl Bar – chicken, beef, various cheeses, avocado, pico de gallo, and jalapeno make up this fantastic bar that everyone will gobble up. (via The Handmade Home)
  • The Pizza Bar – we found this incredible infographic with all the different ways you can top a pizza to help you create amazing combinations on the grill or in the oven.  Add in the typical pepperoni and sausage combo with a couple of these and voila! (via SheKnows)
  • The Grilled Cheese Bar – choose a few bread types, some old stand by cheeses with some interesting new options, a couple of meats like ham and roast beef and get to grilling! (via Your Home Based Mom)

We’ve got them all pinned for you on our Pinterest Board if you want to grab them for later.

In the Trenches

There is a quote that says, “The days are long, but the years are short” when it comes to raising kids,  and this mom reaffirms this point in her blog post from the end of last week.  It’s a great little read, especially when your kids are trying your patience once again. Because, let’s be real, don’t they always? We love them dearly, but they always find a way.

Parting Thought

Marriage can be tough. There are the times when it’s really good, and the times when, well, not. so. much.

We like what this grandmother offered up as advice to her granddaughter right before she got married for when the going gets tough, “Just remember, you’re not marrying a jerk.”  Good point, Grandma. Good point. You picked your spouse to share your life with for good reason, right? Something we should all remember when they’re driving us nuts.
